Italy is home to many beautiful lakes that have become popular tourist destinations in recent years. The largest lake in Italy, Lake Garda (Lago di Garda), covers 38.6 square miles and is located in three different provinces, Trento, Verona, and Brescia. The lake is surrounded by the beautiful alpine terrain that Northern Italy is known for. Cultural enthusiasts visiting Lake Garda will want to take a trip to the Verona Opera, which holds its 85 Degree Festival from June 22 – September 1 in 2007.

Another popular lake with tourists is Lake Como (Lago di Como) which is an excellent destination for sailing and wind surfing. Lake Como is particularly famous for the extravagant lakeside villas which dot its shoreline. In fact, the beauty of Lake Como was replicated in Las Vegas at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, which was named for a town on the lake’s southern shore.
